Issue #1: GIRLHOOD

For this issue, I wanted to focus on and explore the concept of 'girlhood' and all its complexities. What does "being a girl" mean to you? What doesn't it mean? What do you believe about this concept of "girlhood"?

Some thoughts and topics to spark some ideas:

  • The "shared" experiences of girlhood. How do you feel when you think about that concept? What defines those experiences for you? Do you believe that there are "shared" experiences between all girls? Is that even a thing?
  • Girlhood is defined differently from person to person. What does it mean for a transgender woman? What does it mean to a black woman? Does the term "girlhood" accurately represent what all teenage girls go through?
  • The standards and expectations girls are upheld to by the media, men, and other girls. What are your tactics for deconstructing those ideas? How do those standards and expectations make you feel? Particularly for WOC, how do the idealistic standards of beauty make you feel?
  • The stereotypes, friendships/relationships, the "selfie" generation, social media and its impact -- bad and good, body-positivity and self-love, how you empower/ed yourself during your teengirl years, the formative years and puberty, how "girlhood" has changed through the generations.
  • Write a letter to younger teen you or advise younger teen girls, share your newfound wisdom!!
There are so many tangents you can go down when you talk about girlhood, go down them and let me know!

Writing (Poems, Essays, Short Stories):
Please don't send in your writing as a picture, send it in as word file (Google Docs) or in the body of your email!
Visuals (Art, Photos, Illustrations, Collages):
The colour scheme for this issue, although not strict, is gearing towards pastels and glitters. Think Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides and Mary Antoinette, soft and hazy colours.

Some visual inspo:

Carly Rae Jepsen's video for Boy Problems directed by Petra Collins:
